Somatic Experiencing Practitioner
Gentle, body-based support for anxiety, trauma, and chronic overwhelm, from someone who has walked this path herself.
Jodi McFadden is a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. She works with people living with anxiety and panic, the effects of trauma, chronic stress, and the kind of overwhelm that makes even small things feel hard. Many of the people who find her have already done years of talk therapy and still feel stuck in their bodies. Her sessions are slow and gentle, and they follow your nervous system's lead rather than asking you to push through.
She came to this work the long way. In 2010 she left Toronto for New York to dance on Broadway in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. From the outside it looked like the dream. Inside, she was living with anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD, and depression, in a body that never felt safe. For more than ten years she tried everything: therapists, medication, meditation retreats, even training as a yoga instructor. Nothing reached the part of her that was still bracing. Then a friend suggested Somatic Experiencing, and after a few sessions something began to shift. She went on to make her way back to Broadway, and more than that, to feel at home in her own body.
Somatic Experiencing was developed by Dr. Peter Levine. Rather than asking you to relive or retell what happened, it pays attention to what your body is doing right now: sensations, impulses, and the protective responses that kept you safe when something was too much, too fast, or too soon. You do not have to talk about your trauma, and you are always in charge of what you share. Over time your nervous system can learn that it does not have to work so hard to protect you, and there is more room for calm and ease.
Jodi sees people in person in New York City and online over Zoom. Most of the time you are sitting, and online there is no special equipment to set up. She offers a free 30 minute consultation first, so the two of you can tell whether the work is a good fit, and she keeps a small number of sliding scale spaces for people facing financial hardship.
What Jodi offers
Classes and sessions.
Free consultation
A 30 minute conversation about what is bringing you here. Bring your questions. By the end you will both have a sense of whether Somatic Experiencing is the right fit.
Somatic Experiencing session
An hour of gentle, body-based work for anxiety, trauma, and chronic stress. There is often some conversation, and much of the session is noticing what your body is doing, at a pace that feels safe. Jodi finds that many people have a sense of whether the work suits them within the first several sessions.
Sliding scale session
The same hour-long session, offered at a reduced rate to people facing financial hardship. There are only a few of these spaces, so ask about one during your free consultation.
