The evening

What to expect.

A sound bath asks nothing of you. You arrive, find a place on the floor, and settle under a blanket as if for a long rest. Then Rachelle begins to play, and the room fills slowly with the tone of gongs, singing bowls, and chimes, sound you feel in your chest as much as hear.

There is nothing to do and no way to do it wrong. You lie still and listen, and somewhere in the middle of it your breathing slows and your thoughts loosen their hold. People drift to the edge of sleep, and some slip over it. You leave loose, unhurried, and quiet, in the soft state you usually only find after the deepest rest.

The Yurt makes it. A round room, warm and low-lit, holds sound the way an instrument does. There is something about being gathered in a circle, in the dark, while tone moves through the space, that a square room never quite gives.

What to bring

  • A yoga mat, or a thick blanket to lie on
  • A blanket to cover you, and a small pillow or cushion
  • An eye pillow, if you have one
  • Water, and warm socks
  • Nothing else. Come as you are.

Your host

Rachelle

Sound practitioner

A sound practitioner who plays for the room, not the clock.

Rachelle holds sound the way some people hold a conversation, with patience and full attention. Her sessions are unhurried and generous, built to let a tired nervous system finally put itself down.

She plays gongs, singing bowls of crystal and metal, and chimes, layering tone until the room seems to breathe on its own. People come out of her sound baths calmer than they have felt in weeks, and they come back.
